Founders Hall Renovation

Founders Hall, the original sanctuary at Aldersgate Church, is being renovated this year. The goal is a flexible gathering space that can be used for worship, classes and other gatherings, and Day School activities. We thank Steve Guback for the gift that makes this renovation possible.

Work began in late June with asbestos removal and will continue through early September. It is hoped that the renovation will be complete by Kick-Off Sunday, September 10.

Here are two architect’s drawings showing the plan for the renovated space.

Update: July 1, 2017

As of the end of June, here is the status of the project:

Design: September 21, 2016 – March 31, 2017 (Completed)
Third Party review: April 24, 2017 (Completed)
County Permit Review: April 25-May 31, 2017 (Completed)
Construction Contract signed June 19, 2017 (Completed)
County Critical Structures Meeting: June 28, 2017 (Completed)
Asbestos Removal: June 26 – 29, 2017 (Completed)
Construction: June 30-September 1, 2017 (Projected)

The construction contract signed was for $412,596 for Founders Hall only. The approach we are following is to award the construction for Founders Hall first. Once we are through with the limited demolition (by July 14), we can determine if there are any major unknowns that will require use of the contingency money that has been set aside in the budget. If the determination is that the contingency money won’t be needed (for contingencies), then we can apply that money to completing the kitchen. This path forward keeps our options open to get as much as we can out of the budget.

Update: July 21, 2017

Although the demolition is still ongoing in Founders Hall, the architect and builder are confident that there will not be substantial surprises in the remaining work that will require all of the contingency funding. Therefore, consistent with the direction from the committee, the architect and builder were advised that that the church is ready to proceed with the kitchen renovation. This will add $27,821.36 to the construction cost. When taking all the costs (including design fees) into consideration, we have now obligated $571,008.94 of the $623,215 available through Steve Guback’s gifts.
