Confirmation is an opportunity to respond to the workings of God’s grace in our lives. This class provides some of the key information that students will need before they decide to affirm their faith and their intention to live the rest of their lives as members of God’s Church. For those that are already baptized, it is also an affirmation of the promises made by God, their parents, and the congregation at their baptism. Throughout the year, students will discover what it takes to follow Christ and to model His love and mercy to the world by participating in interactive class sessions, exciting field trips, service projects, and worship.
Students will be required to attend the weekly class meetings on Sunday morning from 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. (5 absences allowed); attend worship at least 15 times throughout the year; attend a lock-in September 27-28, 2019; write a personal faith statement called a Credo; and attend a retreat February 21-23, 2019. The cost of the class is $150.00 per student. This covers class materials, the retreat, and the field trips.
Students will be given the opportunity at the end of the class year to be confirmed into the Church by a profession of faith and affirmation (or reaffirmation) of the Baptismal vows on Pentecost Sunday (May 30 and 31, 2020). The goal of the class is for students to begin to understand for themselves what it means to be a Christian and a member of God’s Church. Once they have a better understanding, they can decide for themselves if this is the faith journey that they wish to embark on knowing that no matter what they feel called to do, the love of God goes with them.
Confirmation needs input from everyone. We need supportive siblings that will share their own experiences, and we need supportive parents who will pray for their confirmand’s journey, help answer the questions that come out of class with honesty and grace, and support the choice their confirmand makes at the end of the class year regarding their profession of faith. We need parents who get students to class each week, who make sure they attend worship, and who will give their time to chaperone and drive to field trips and service projects.
This class is open to all students in sixth grade and up.
